Big Brothers Big Sisters of America provides governance, compliance, technology, partnerships, collaboration, and leadership support to affiliates impacting children’s lives in these key areas:
The Carnival Foundation donated $5 million to BBBS of Greater Miami to acquire a permanent home for the organization, named the “Carnival Center for Excellence.”
Big Kathy and Little Moranda, Alaska
Little Octavia and Big Victoria, Eastern Missouri
We are proud of the many new programs and ideas that come from our affiliates and want to share a few examples:
The Carnival Foundation donated $5 million to BBBS of Greater Miami to acquire a permanent home for the organization, named the “Carnival Center for Excellence.”
Leveraging a wave of local startup companies and entrepreneurs, BBBS of Greater Pittsburgh’s STARTup SOMETHING program introduces Littles to unlimited career potential. By inviting Littles to visit various startup companies, STARTup SOMETHING highlights the importance of resiliency, introduces Littles to the concept of entrepreneurship, and exposes them to emerging career paths. This initiative has been embraced by the startup/ technology community and has offered something specifically of interest to older Littles, while attracting new volunteers and donors.
In collaboration with the State of Alaska Office of Children’s Services, BBBS Alaska’s Sync program provides mentors to foster care system youth, ages 14-21. Personal, practical, and emotional support from Bigs helps Littles navigate the challenges and opportunities of adulthood and independence. Big Sister Kathy and Little Sister Moranda are just one example of this program’s impact. When they met, Moranda was living in a facility for homeless teens. With Big Sister Kathy’s guidance, Moranda graduated from high school, enrolled in classes at the University of Alaska, secured a job in early education, leased her first apartment, and is now a foster parent.

Mentorship directly impacts education. BBBS of Eastern Missouri built on this connection and developed ABCToday®, a national accountability model that tracks, responds to, and improves student attendance, behavior, and course performance in reading and math. What started as a 200-student program focused on matches grew to serve 7,500 students in the affiliate’s area. ABCToday® received unprecedented recognition from the White House, U.S. Department of Education, Johns Hopkins University, Civic Enterprises, and the American Association of State Funded Colleges.

Last year, more than 300 affiliates served over 170,000 Big and Little matches and provided assistance to families and children on our waiting lists. These affiliates are the driving force behind moving children forward into brighter futures.
